1. METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS
Silicon Carbide has been found to be an extraordinary powerful deoxidizer, as well as an economical and effective source of silicon and carbon. It has been employed for more than 50 years by the iron and steel industry.
When silicon carbide is added to the molten metal it decomposes, and both silicon and carbon combine with oxygen. Some of the silicon replaces the metal in metal oxides present in the melt, forming silicon dioxide, which is more stable than the replaced metal oxide. The reduced metal goes into the metal melt, the silica remains in slag, while the CO formed comes off as a gas. A certain amount of free silicon provided from silicon carbide goes into the melt, raising the silicon content.
Application: Desoxidizer, Silicon and Carbon provider for steel and furnacing industries.
TYPES:
A) FERROSIC: Ferrocarbo: Is an 88-92% content of silicon carbide loose grain, graded 3/8″ and finer. Normally presented in “easy to handle 25 Kg. bags” or one metric ton supersacks. FERROSIC is widely used in steel melting as a deoxidizer. It is added in ladle to rimmed, semi-killed and killed steel grades, used for slag deoxidization in arc melting, for acid electric melting process, or as fuel in the BOF (basic oxygen furnace).
The electrically melted iron, processed in coreless induction and channel induction furnaces, commonly have problems related with high level of steel scrap in the charge, in addition to extensive superheating and long holding times. These practices are reported to encourage undercooling, thicker chill layer and undesirable graphite distribution. All these problems are minimized and some other advantages can be obtained by using FERROSIC.
B) FERROSIC Briquettes: Briqueta Sic 56, Briqueta 36%
Bonded silicon carbide, molded as briquettes are provided for use in cupolas. For addition as 1% to 3% of the metallic charge. Cast iron thus treated is found to have a more uniform microstructure. It has improved fluidity, yields sounder castings, “chill” depth in thin casting sections is reduced and precipitation of graphite in the desired “type A” form is favored in thicker sections.
When iron is treated with silicon carbide it is known to exhibit better machine ability and enhanced mechanical properties due to the improved structure mentioned above.
2. ABRASIVE PRODUCTS
A) EV-6 Grain (Type C-6): Is a black, semi-friable, medium density, silicon carbide abrasive, with a blocky shape, magnetically treated. For use in vitrified wheels and also capable to be bonded organically. Available On grit sizes 10 through 220.
Application: Abrasive Wheels.
B) EV-21 Grain (Type G-21): Is a black, semi-friable, medium density, silicon carbide abrasive with a sharp grain shape, magnetically treated, specially designed to be used in the production of coated abrasives (paper, cloth and fibers). Available In, grit sizes 10 through 220.
Application: Sandpaper Elaboration.
C) EV-WSC Grain (Type WSC): Is a block, medium density, silicon carbide abrasive, with a blocky shape, magnetically treated. EV-WSC is used primarily for wire sawing in the granite, marble and building stone industry. Available in group-graded fractions such as, 16/30, 30/60, 46/70, 46/120, 60/90, 60/120 and 120/220.
